PROGRAMS
Adapted Integration Program: Students who are unable to cope with the regular academic program, but are seen to be receptive to academic instructions, are mainstreamed through this modified pull-out program. This program offers all the academic subjects mandated by the Department of Education according to the child’s level. The students are required to meet the minimum academic expectations or standards of the school. Lessons pertinent to transitioning to pre-vocational skills will also be introduced.
PROGRAMS
Functional Integration Program (Non-graded): Students who demonstrate cognitive functioning and adaptive behavior in the home, school, and community environments at a level significantly below that of their typically developing peers, even with program modifications, adaptations, and accommodations, will be placed in this program. The focus of this program will be on developing skills for self-sufficiency and direction, management of daily activities, and community integration.
The clusters indicated below are presented for the purpose of grouping them, but basically they fall under a non- graded program.
“We make learning fun and lasting!”
More than a slogan, this is a commitment that aptly encapsulates Brightwoods education — a commitment rooted in the belief that all children are unique and deserving of a nurturing environment where they could grow into confident, productive, positive, and happy individuals.
Brightwoods applies a dynamic curriculum, called the Curriculum of LIFE, which highlights four interconnected elements: Learning, Introspection, Flexibility, and Engagement. It places all students at the heart of every educational decision, anchors learning to real-life experiences, and fosters the development of the mind, body, and spirit.
The Curriculum of LIFE focuses on learning rather than teaching. This means prioritizing learning goals and growing students who want to learn, know how to learn, and apply what they learn skillfully and mindfully.
To achieve this, the teachers collaborate to help students build a strong connection to the curriculum, the people involved in their learning, and the larger world. They empower students with the understanding of where they need to go as learners and how to get there. A typical day in Brightwoods is characterized by engaging and authentic learning experiences that encourage students to wonder, ask, create, listen, reflect and do things that allow them to develop habits of mind and achieve self-mastery. Regular brain breaks, physical activities, and wellness talks also play a significant role in their learning.
Students are introduced early on to a wide variety of ways to learn. Whenever possible, they are given a choice in the way they learn and demonstrate their knowledge and skills. When asked to summarize a story, for example, students may choose to draw a picture, create a song, a skit, or a vlog, or submit a written summary. What a great way to engage all kinds of intelligences!
There are many opportunities for students to make learning decisions for themselves and pursue their personal interests. Grade schoolers can choose which Music, Art, Physical Education, or Work Education class they want to attend for the quarter. Special interest clubs are available for students who want to pursue their passion in the arts, culture, sports, community engagement, and other areas. A lineup of exciting annual programs awaits all Brightons such as Skills Demonstration programs in PreSchool, Showtime in Grade School, Sportsfest, Musicfest, and Arts and Science Fair in High School. Those who are up for the challenge are trained rigorously to boost their competitive spirit and prepare them for competitions at various levels.
When students struggle academically, Brightwoods’ Helping Hands program comes in. It mainly aims to provide an individualized learning experience to help students address the areas they are having difficulties with, manage their school work, and build confidence in their abilities.
To further help students understand their own growth process and take leadership of their own learning, student-teacher conferences are held regularly. Towards the end of the school year, student-led conferences are also conducted with parents and teachers as audience. These conferences motivate our students to communicate who they are as learners and what kind of support they need for them to realize their goals and dreams in life.
Students appreciate being heard and thrive on the support of their parents and teachers. Moreover, they benefit greatly when there is a strong partnership between their two most important worlds — the home and the school. This is exactly what exists in Brightwoods School. Through the years, Brightwoods has grown into a community of learners and families where love, laughter, and life abide.
With these and more, we proudly say, here at Brightwoods School, we make learning fun and lasting!
